Electronic Address Scheme (EAS)

The Electronic Address Scheme (EAS) code list defines what kind of electronic address an identifier represents – for example an email address or a German Leitweg-ID. In EN 16931 e-invoices it qualifies the electronic addresses of the seller (BT-34) and the buyer (BT-49).

What is the Electronic Address Scheme?

Electronic addresses in EN 16931 invoices consist of two parts: the actual value (e.g. "invoice@company.com" or "991-12345-67") and a scheme identifier that says how this value is to be interpreted. The permitted scheme identifiers come from the EAS code list. It is one of two code lists that the European Commission (Digital Europe Programme, formerly CEF) maintains directly for EN 16931, and it is updated regularly.

Usage in EN 16931, XRechnung and ZUGFeRD

The EAS code qualifies the electronic address of the seller (BT-34-1) and the buyer (BT-49-1). In the UBL syntax this is the schemeID attribute of the cbc:EndpointID element. Business rule BR-CL-25 requires the scheme identifier to come from the EAS list.

Important codes

EM – Electronic mail: an ordinary email address (SMTP). The usual choice for B2B invoicing by email. Note: EM is not permitted in the Peppol network, since Peppol uses its own delivery channels.
0204 – Leitweg-ID: the address of German public-sector bodies. If you invoice German authorities (B2G), use this code together with the Leitweg-ID provided by the contracting authority.
9958 – German Leitweg ID: deprecated; replaced by 0204.
9930 – Germany VAT number: a German VAT identification number used as an address identifier.

Usage in RechnungsAPI

The electronicAddress field consists of scheme (an EAS code) and value. E-invoices require an electronic address; typical combinations are EM with an email address for B2B and 0204 with the Leitweg-ID when invoicing authorities. See the API documentation for details.
